Professor Gilberto Montibeller

DSc (UFSC/University of Strathclyde), MSc (UFSC), BSc (UFSC)

  • Professor of Management Sciences

Expertise: decision analysis; risk analysis; strategic decision making; prioritisation of risks; emerging threats; health policy.

Gilberto Montibeller is Professor of Management Science at Loughborough University (UK) and a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Southern California (USA). He joined Loughborough in 2015 after spending a decade as a tenured faculty in the Department of Management at the London School of Economics. He has taken senior management roles at Loughborough University, as Associate Dean for Enterprise and Head of the Management Science and Operations Group and is, currently, the Director of Professional and Executive Education at Loughborough Business School.

He was awarded a BSc (Hons) in Electrical Engineering (UFSC), MSc in Engineering Economic Analysis (UFSC) and PhD in Engineering Economic Analysis (UFSC in cooperation with Univ. of Strathclyde). After his doctorate, he continued his studies as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Management Science at the University of Strathclyde.

Prof Montibeller is an expert on strategic risk and decision analysis. His main areas of application are security decision analysis and health risk management, having led projects for the World Health Organization, Pan-American Health Organization, UK Department for Environment, Health and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), UK Department of Health, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), USAID, among others.

He is Associate Editor of the Informs Decision Analysis journal and has served as Area Editor of the Journal of Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis. He has published widely in top journals in decision sciences, authoring or co-authoring more than 50 peer reviewed articles and book chapters. The quality of his research has been recognised by best publications awards from the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), the Society for Risk Analysis, and the International Society on Multi-Criteria Decision Making.

He has been a visiting scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA, Austria), and CNRS Lamsade at Paris Dauphine University (France). He is a visiting professor at the University of Sao Paulo (Brazil) and Adjunct Professor at the Hertie School of Government (Germany).

Prof Montibeller has extensive experience with executive education over more than 20 years, having taught courses at the LSE executive schools (UK), LSE corporate education (UK), Warwick Business School (UK), Hertie School of Government (Germany) and IE Business School (Spain).

Prof Montibeller's main research focus is on behavioural issues in risk and decision analysis. This encompasses the study of cognitive and motivational biases in the elicitation of judgments; the development of debiasing tools against cognitive and motivational biases; and the design of decision aiding methods that can address the inherent cognitive limitations of decision makers and experts in providing judgments and interacting with decision support tools.

His main areas of applications are on security decision analysis and health risk management. This encompasses the development of decision support systems to help with the prioritization of bio-security threats; the design of assessment tools to evaluate and improve health capabilities and reduce vulnerabilities; and the development of frameworks to support the allocation of scarce resources for enhanced security.

His research has been published in journals such as Risk Analysis, European Journal of Operational Research, Decision Support Systems, INFORMS Decision Analysis, Journal of the Operational Research Society, Technological Forecasting & Social Change, OMEGA, among others. The quality of his research has been recognised by best publications awards from the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (Informs), the Society for Risk Analysis, and the International Society on Multi-Criteria Decision Making.

He has been invited to co-edit several special issues on leading topics in decision sciences by journals such as Risk Analysis (on spatial risk analysis), European Journal of Operational Research (on problem structuring), INFORMS Decision Analysis (on health decision analysis), and EURO Journal on Decision Processes (on behavioural issues in supported decisions).

Prof Montibeller is Associate Editor of the INFORMS Decision Analysis journal and has served as area editor of the Journal of Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis. He is on the editorial boards of the EURO Journal on Decision Processes and Futures & Foresight Science journals.
