Mark's research concentrates on how people interact with and use information to enable them to achieve their objectives. This interest has evolved over many years while studying different groups of people, understanding their information behaviour and needs and the factors that affect their information experience. This has led him to focus on people's information capabilities and information literacy and people's ability to access, manage and use data, information and knowledge that is associated with research, independent learning and knowledge creation. It has also led him to explore methods for engaging with potential users of information systems and services and, in particular, participative approaches for developing people-centred information services.

He has supervised a number of PhDs and these are listed under the Centre for Information Management's website
