Neil Doherty holds an honours degree in Management Science [1981], an MSc in Engineering Management [1987] and a Doctorate in Software Engineering [1992]. Prior to joining Loughborough University, Neil spent many years as a programmer, systems analyst and team leader, working on a variety of IT projects, primarily in the oil and gas and manufacturing sectors.

Since joining Loughborough University, Neil’s research interests have been primarily located within the Information Systems domain, with specific topics including the treatment of organisational issues in systems development, the organisational impacts of IT, the role of information security policies and the impact of strategic information systems planning.

Neil’s work in this area has been published – or accepted for publication - in a range of academic journals, including: European Journal of Information Systems, Journal of Information Technology, Journal of Strategic Information Systems, IEEE Transactions in Engineering Management, Journal of End User Computing, Information Resources Management Journal, Information Technology & People, Behaviour and IT and Information and Management.

Neil also has research interests in the Marketing and Retailing domains, particularly with respect to the uptake and impact of e-commerce. Neil’s work in this area has been published in journals such as: Journal of Business Research, Journal of Marketing Management, the Service Industries Journal, Internet Research, International Review of Retail, Distribution and Consumer Research, and European Journal of Marketing.

Neil has recently acted as Guest Editor [with Professor Malcolm King] for a special edition of the European Journal of Information Systems, on Socio-Technical approaches to IS development.

Neil is an Associate Editor for the International Journal of E-Business Research and has recently acted as a Guest Editor for a special edition of this journal on electronic CRM [with Dr Nigel Lockett – Lancaster University]. Neil has also recently acted as a guest editor for a special edition of the International Journal of Retail and Distribution Management, on electronic retailing (with Dr Fiona Ellis-Chadwick - Open University).
