Knowledge management; systems thinking; action research

When Gill joined Loughborough University in 2004 she brought a wealth of experience from a successful engineering career in the semiconductor industry and from posts in teaching-led and distance learning institutes in the HE sector.

Gill’s expertise in knowledge management has developed from her early academic roots in systems thinking and creative problem solving. Her research has taken her into a wide range of organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors where she has assisted in programmes of change and development. The impact of Gill’s research in the energy sector and the voluntary sector has been recognised internationally - in the Knowledge Management and Intellectual Capital Excellence Awards she was co-recipient of a Certificate of Merit in 2015 and, in 2017, was a member of the winning team.

Gill has published around 100 research outputs including papers in prestigious knowledge management journals such as Knowledge Management Research and Practice and Journal of Knowledge Management. She was co-author of the ‘best paper’ at the 2013 International Conference on Events and, similarly, co-author of the ‘Winner of Outstanding Paper in the 2015 Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence’. More recently, Gill is proud to have edited a special issue of Journal of Knowledge Management focusing on the not-for-profit sector.

She has received around three quarters of a million pounds research funding from sources such as Nuffield, AHRC, British Academy, Royal Society for Edinburgh, EPSRC and Santander Bank Ltd., as well as from commercial organisations. In addition, Gill has organised and attended numerous national and international conferences. In October 2015 she was the opening keynote speaker at the 5th eLearning Conference in Bahrain and in January 2016 was an invited panellist and workshop leader at Kuwait’s National Conference entitled ‘Contemporary Roles of Governments in the Knowledge Economy Era’.

From 2008-2013 Gill was Director of Research Degree Programme in the Department of Information Science where her focus was on nurturing a research community with PhD students. She is building on that experience in her current leadership role of Director of Doctoral Programmes. At the University level, Gill has led the Knowledge Management Interest Group since 2010 and is one of the longest serving members of the Ethical Advisory Committee (2006-2012).

Gill is committed to facilitating high quality learning. She was a Loughborough University Teaching Assessor from 2010-2017 and was promoted to Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2014. Gill has been External Examiner for MSc programmes at universities such as The Open University and Sheffield University as well as PhD examiner in the UK, South Africa and Australia.

In 2016, she successfully completed a Royal Academy of Engineering Industrial Fellowship at the Energy Technologies Institute  entitled, ‘Engineering Knowledge Management: Adding Value to the Energy Sector’.
