Dr Stewart Johnstone MA Hons (Aberdeen) MSc (UMIST, Manchester), PhD (Loughborough), Chartered MCIPD
Lecturer in Human Resource Management and Organisational Behaviour
Co-ordinator, Business Research Seminar Series
Stewart joined the Business School as Lecturer in Human Resource Management in July 2009. Prior to this he worked as a Research Associate in the Department of Civil and Building Engineering at Loughborough.
Previous research projects include a major multi-university EPSRC ‘Grand Challenge’ project: 'Immortal information and through-life knowledge management: strategies and tools for the emerging product-service business paradigm'. This project investigated HRM strategy and practice in the aerospace, construction and engineering sectors, and in particular the people management implications of the ‘servitization’ phenomenon in global engineering organisations. The work involved detailed case studies and collaboration with several industrial partners and ten other academic institutions.
His doctoral research, completed in 2007, investigated collaborative union management relationships and ‘workplace partnerships’ in the UK financial service sector. This research drew upon in-depth case studies of employment relations in several major British banking organisations.
Stewart has published in a range of academic journals including Human Resource Management Journal, Journal of Industrial Relations, Industrial Relations Journal, Economic and Industrial Democracy, Employee Relations, Service Industries Journal and International Journal of Operations and Production Management. His first book has been been published as ‘Labour and management co-operation’ (Gower, 2010).
Stewart’s interests span human resource management and employment relations, but particular interests include employee participation and representation in both union and non-union contexts, and HRM/employment relations in financial services.
In respect of teaching he contributes to a range of modules including HRM, international HRM, sociology of work, and employment relations, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
He is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (Chartered MCIPD), the British Universities Industrial Relations Association, and the International Labour and Employment Relations Association (ILERA).
