Senior Lecturer in Organisational Development

John joined Loughborough University in November 1994 having previously worked in people management roles in local Government and the National Heath Service. Initially, his main research interest was management competencies.

He has undertaken three funded research projects in this topic area: one funded by the Department of Health, one by the School of Business and Economics (with colleagues) and one by the Management Charter Initiative/DfEE (with colleagues).

Research on human resource issues in the healthcare sector is his current major interest. He has managed a research collaboration with a NHS Trust exploring organisational culture and climate issues. A major project (working with colleagues), funded by the Department of Health's Human Resources Research Initiative investigated the attractiveness of the NHS as an employer.

A follow-on project invited by the Department of Health has investigated why allied health professionals stay in, leave and (sometimes) return to work in the National Health Service.

John is keen to supervise PhD research investigating human resource issues in healthcare. Previous studies have looked at employee turnover, professionals’ work perceptions and organisational impacts of new technologies. In addition to these research areas John is interested in the concepts of commitment, identity and roles in healthcare professionals/managers.

He has published in various academic journals, books and conferences, as well as some professional journals (see Publications list for details).

John is a graduate member of the British Psychological Society and a corporate member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. He contributed to the second edition of the British Psychological Society's review of personality assessment instruments (level B).

In respect of teaching John delivers material at undergraduate, postgraduate and post-experience levels.
