Conference, 23rd September 2010: ‘Enterprise Activity in Turbulent Times of Crisis and Recession in Britain

George is Reader in Innovation and Enterprise, Director of the PhD programme (Business) and a member of the Centre of Organisational Resilience (COR).

He joined Loughborough University as a lecturer in Business Economics in September 2007. He was successively promoted to senior lecturer in December 2010 and Reader in January 2012. Formerly, he held a Research Fellowship in Applied Economics at the Centre for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (CSME) at the Warwick Business School (WBS) from 2005-2007 and teaching assistant posts in economics/econometrics at Warwick (2005-2006), Essex (2004-2005) and Leicester (2002-2004) Universities.

He received his PhD in Economics from the Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER) at the University of Essex in 2006.

His current research interests encompass the economics of small firms and entrepreneurship, and also cover empirical work in the field of the economics of crime.

George recently organised a conference on ‘Enterprise Activity in Turbulent Times of Crisis and Recession in Britain’ at Loughborough and presented papers at prestigious international conferences for which he won four best paper awards and the Scottish Enterprise award in the area of small business research.

Additionally, he has given several seminars worldwide (e.g. The University of the West Indies, University of Guanajuato, Technological University of Lisbon, University of Macedonia, Darmstadt University of Technology) and was granted research affiliations with the CSME at WBS and the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) at the University of the West Indies.

George has generated research income from external contracts with major funders such as the European Union (EU) Leonardo da Vinci programme, the Department of Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR), the British Academy and Barclays Bank.

He is currently editing a special issue of the International Small Business Journal (ISBJ) on ‘Enterprise Activity, Performance and Policy during Times of Crisis’ and co-editing a book on ‘How Can HR Drive Growth?’.

He teaches in the area of Business Economics and has received a teaching fellowship with The Higher Education Academy (FHEA).

George was born in 1978 on the island of Crete. He is married and has one daughter named Irini (meaning peace in Greek).
