CHaRM - Organisational Health and Safety Management
Research and consultancy in this area focuses on the assessment of health and safety management and the development of practical approaches to facilitate improvements in health and safety management and performance in a range of industrial organisations.
At the heart of successful health and safety management lies effective risk management, which is underpinned by risk assessment and risk control. There are three areas of control that can be employed:
- Physical controls – plant and equipment which is fit for purpose;
- Procedural controls – systems and procedures to operate and maintain plant and equipment; and
- People controls – people who are competent to operate plant and equipment and use the systems and procedures through knowledge, skills and attitudes.
These are the positive inputs to health and safety management, which are put in place to prevent the negative outputs (the failures). Continual improvement in health and safety management is about expanding the positive inputs to reduce the negative outputs.
Our work focuses on the identification strengths and weaknesses in these inputs and seeks to develop ways to appropriately expand and measures these inputs. Recently we have
- Developed an operational safety competition for assessing site safety performance within a water company;
- Prepared and implemented a tanker-driver questionnaire to assess employee perceptions of management attitudes to health and safety within an oil company;
- Implemented an employee centred programme for assessing and improving compliance with safe behaviours in a chemical company; and
- Developed a framework for motivating small firms to manage health and safety.
