Occupational Health and Safety Management

MSc

As well as holders of Loughborough University's Postgraduate Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Management, we recognise a range of other Diplomas as an entry route onto the MSc, and may accredit your prior learning in meeting the requirements of the MSc. These include:

What study do I have to undertake to be awarded the MSc?

You will have to successfully complete two projects.

  1. A practical project of 6 month's duration requiring an in-depth study of one aspect of occupational health and safety management. In most cases this will be a work-based project. You will make an initial proposal as to the content of your project and discuss this with your supervisor. You will be required to present a project report of uo to 12,000 words.
  2. An original research project of 12 month's duration. As with the practical project the content will be discussed with your supervisor. At the end of this period you will be required to submit a thesis of up to 20,000 words.

Are there any attendance requirements?

Yes. The practical project requires you to attend the University for one day. During the day you will be given guidance on undertaking the project.

The research project requires you to attend for three short courses, 2 of two days duration and 1 one day duration. These cover research methods as well as discussion on individual progress.

What support do I get during the project?

Apart from the short courses, you will be encouraged to maintain frequent contact with your supervisor. This may mean occasional meetings at mutually convenient times. Working closely with you supervisor and submitting frequent reports is a key criterion for success. You will also have access to the university library which enables you to access several hundred online databases and e-journals. This includes: Occupational Health and Safety Information Service (OHSIS), Lexis Nexis Professional, Safety Science, Journal of Safety Research, as well as more specific databases that cover the Occupational Health and Safety discipline.

What is the pass mark?

You must achieve a mark of at least 50% in each project.

What happens if either project does not meet the required minimum standard?

A candidate will have one further opportunity to submit an acceptable project. A second failure will result in being withdrawn from the programme. Candidates will not be permitted to start the research project until they have successfully completed the practical project.

What are the entry requirements?

What personal skills do I need?
