AFM Graduate wins Accounting & Finance ‘Graduate of the Year Award’

Daniel Jacob at graduation, 2010

Accounting and Finance Management (BSc) graduate Daniel Jacob has won the ACCA sponsored ‘Accounting & Finance Graduate of the Year Award’ at the 2010 Graduate 100 awards ceremony. Less than a week after the School was ranked 2nd in the UK for Accounting and Finance by The Sunday Times, Daniel’s superb achievement highlights the outstanding calibre of Loughborough’s accounting graduates. The annual British Graduate 100 Awards, held on 15th September, are a unique initiative that profiles and promotes Britain’s highest achieving recent graduates and the university departments behind their academic success. Over 13,000 students were nominated from 80 UK universities and those ultimately shortlisted were scrutinised by a judging panel that included BBC2's Dragons' Den panellist James Caen. The awards are the only initiative of their kind, where shortlisted graduates and their respective universities are recognised and celebrated collectively with a prestigious black tie gala dinner ceremony in London, attended by university heads of department, graduates, high profile guest speakers, local and national press, and some of the UK’s leading employers.

The award rounds off a glittering end to Daniel’s time at Loughborough. Daniel graduated with a first class degree in Accounting and Finance Management and was top of his class, for which he received the Accounting and Financial Management ICAEW Gold Prize. The prize was sponsored by The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and was awarded to the finalist with the best academic performance. Daniel also secured a graduate professional training contract with Grant Thornton having spent his third year on paid work placement with them last year.

On winning the award, Daniel commented: "My years at Loughborough University have been the best of my life, and have provided me with the tools and opportunities to pursue a career in the accounting profession. Winning the 'Accounting & Finance Graduate of the Year Award' was an enormous honour, and my success was, in part, due to the high regard in which business leaders hold Loughborough University.”

Programme Director of the Accounting and Finance Management degree Ruth King added: “Daniel Jacob has consistently performed at first class standard on what is a competitive and demanding programme of study. He exceeded company expectations in important areas whilst on placement, excelling in client relationships and organisational skills. Articulate and personable, Daniel is a fine example of the sort of student we aim to graduate at Loughborough.”
