Celebrating 25 years of retail education and research at Loughborough University
On the 28th of September, the School of Business and Economics is hosting a celebration of 25 years of retail education and research at Loughborough University.
In the last two decades, while retailing has experienced phenomenal change, Loughborough University remains a constant force in developing highly qualified and talented graduates who have contributed to shaping the retail industry.
The 25-year anniversary event will celebrate the success of the Loughborough Retailing, Marketing and Management [RMM] degree through its graduates and students, with particular recognition to the retailers and industry partners who have supported the degree during the past 25 years.
During this time degree sponsors have included Sainsbury’s, Barclays Retail, Wickes Aid and latterly, Waitrose who provide guest speakers, workshops and host an annual ‘Live’ case Supply Chain project for final year undergraduates.
Additionally, Boots UK host an annual Retail Operations student project and other regular curriculum contributors include Barclays, DHL, George Clothing, Mondelēz International and Specsavers.
Dr Cathy Hart, who joined the School in 1992 as Sainsbury Retail Fellow to help establish the degree, has been a key player in shaping the degree:
“The continuing support and involvement from our industry partners has been instrumental to the success of the Retailing, Marketing and Management degree at Loughborough University. We particularly value the skills and curriculum involvement provided by senior managers, which is critical in developing the graduate employability of Loughborough Retail students.”
The School has also developed impactful research in the field of retailing. During the last five years, Cathy has led innovative research projects investigating Town Centre Consumer Behaviour, and who, together with Dr Fiona Ellis Chadwick, will be presenting their latest research investigating ‘Physical to Digital High Streets’.
Alumni guest speakers at this one-day event include Jill Ross, Managing Director for Retail at Accenture, and James Farnham, Head of Online Strategy, Dunelm Direct. Loughborough Retail graduates have gone on to wide-ranging careers, working for leading industry players such as John Lewis, Waitrose, Boots, Next, Marks and Spencer, Amazon, Topshop, Next, ASOS, Mars, Mondelēz International, Unilever, and Carlsberg UK amongst others.
Alongside the networking aspects of this anniversary event, the day will also include a practical workshop on professional development skills by two leading academics in human resource management and organisational behaviour: Dr Cheryl Travers and Dr Ray Randall.
Hear from them and other leading players such as Boots, Sainsbury’s and DHL on topics including: ‘Future of retail stores’, ‘Evolving customer experiences’ and ‘Bricks to clicks in home furnishings’.
