Waitrose has sponsored the School’s BSc (Hons) in Retailing, Marketing and Management degree for the past 15 years, with two annual scholarships awarded out by the premier food retailer to the two students on the programme who have achieved the highest academic performance in their year of study.

This year, the winning students are Sophie Barcroft (in her final year of the course) and Sarah Jones (in the second year of the course).

The prizes are meant to encourage and reward outstanding academic achievement; a commitment that reflects the overriding value Waitrose places on the course and on its continued relationship with the School of Business and Economics, which has been delivering retail education for almost 25 years.

The event, which took place earlier this week on May 13th, was attended by Dr Keith Pond (Associate Dean, Teaching), Dr Nina Michaelidou (Director, BSc Retailing Marketing and Management course), Cathy Hart (Placements Director), as well as other members within the School’s Retailing and Marketing discipline. The scholarships were presented by Tim Chicken, Head of National Distribution for Waitrose, at the ceremony.

In addition to the annual student scholarships, Waitrose provides guest lectures, talks and workshops by its managers; student projects and fieldtrips to head office, stores and distribution centres; as well as student placements and graduate positions.

Programme Director Nina Michaelidou said:

Huge congratulations go out to both Sophie and Sarah on the Retailing Marketing Management degree, who won the Waitrose Scholarship Prizes for their top performance on the programme.”

Placements Director Cathy Hart added:

“Waitrose’s continuing support demonstrates the superb reputation Loughborough University School of Business and Economics students hold with national employers. We particularly value the skills and curriculum involvement provided by Waitrose Senior Managers, which is vital in developing the employability of Loughborough students. We look forward to continuing this fruitful partnership with Waitrose and the John Lewis Partnership.”
