About the Course

Aimed at experienced managers returning to a learning environment from wide-ranging backgrounds, this executive education programme offers professional relevance combined with academic rigour, but it is Loughborough University’s unique sporting heritage and worldwide reputation that guarantees the MBA stands out from the crowd. 

The University campus boasts one of the highest concentrations of top class sports training facilities found anywhere in the world and acts as the official preparation camp for Team GB and Team Japan in the 2012 Olympics. It is also home to a number of sport’s governing organisations, bodies and federations.  For many, sporting achievement and Loughborough University are inextricably intertwined and our links to elite athletes, sporting organisations and businesses not only ensure course content is up-to-date and relevant, but will also give you access to world-class experts and guest speakers.

In common with our other MBAs, enterprise and innovation are embedded in the programme. On the International Sports Management MBA you will undertake a module (unique in the UK) in Sports Technology and Innovation.  Informed by Loughborough’s world-leading research and development of new products, the module provides the opportunity to work directly with Loughborough’s world renowned Sports Technology Institute in evaluating and developing a commercial plan for new products or technologies. 

Modules in media management, the sports management environment and human resources address managerial challenges particular to the world of sport. The module International Sports Management offers a global perspective on the key themes of policy and governance, sports events management and sports performance management.

Course Structure

Year 1:
Decision Support Systems

The aims of this module are to: develop an understanding of commonly used decision support techniques and an awareness of how Information Systems can support an organisation.

Marketing

The aims of this module are to provide participants with an understanding of the introductory principles and concepts relating to the management of the marketing mix and to explore strategic marketing issues.

Accounting for Managers

The aims of this module are to provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary for an understanding of financial management and its impact on decision-making in a sports industry organisational context.  The module also aims to develop the ability to analyse and interpret numerical information of a financial nature.

Human Resource Management in Sports Organisations

The aims of this module are to provide participants with a richer understanding of issues associated with the management of human resources within sports organisations.

Sports Management Environment

The aims of this module are to equip participants with an understanding of sports management environments and models appropriate to management decision-making.

Operations Management

The aims of this module are to provide participants with an understanding of the ways in which sports organisations manage their operations and introduce techniques that can be utilised to improve effectiveness.  The module also develops skills in obtaining, analysing and applying information from a variety of sources, and to develop numerical reasoning and the ability to interpret numerical information.

 

Year 2:
Project Management

The aims of this module are to provide a critical understanding of the role of a project manager in a variety of sports industry contexts as well as a critical understanding of the project planning and control techniques.  The module also explores human resource management methodologies available to project managers and builds and develops project management skills that can be applied to business or organisational situations.

Media Management

This module aims to develop an understanding of the media, media strategy and media management at regional, national and international levels.  It also develops skills in managing the media and media interactions in a rapidly changing media environment.

Managing Sports Technology and Innovation

The aims of this module are to introduce the concepts of sports technology evaluation and commercialisations as incorporated in the HiTec Algorithm developed in the US and adapted for the UK context.  The module enables participants to apply the algorithm to real sports business opportunities and to engage fully in the complex process of managing innovation.  This module is unique in the UK.

Leading Strategic Change

The aims of this module are to develop an understanding of the changing nature of the practice and processes of strategic management.  The module develops skills in the area of strategic analysis, the development of strategic options and change management.  It encourages an openness to new ideas and an awareness that in many situations there is range of alternatives that should be evaluated.

International Sports Management

The aims of this module are to develop an understanding of the management concepts, models and competencies that may be applied in the international sports environment and to develop skills in managing sports and sports-related organisations internationally.  This module is unique in the UK.

Sports Management Project

The aims of this module are to develop a working knowledge of the standard processes and methods used in business and management research.  It gives participants the experience of executing a practically-based research study on an aspect of sports management of their choice and to integrate ideas from the programme into a problem-solving context.

 

Teaching and Assessment
  • Learning and teaching is provided through lectures, seminars and workshops, consultancy style projects, web-based guided study and guided independent work. Case studies and group work feature on a number of modules.
  • Feedback to the learning process is through coursework assignment, class tests, one-to-one contact with lecturers and/or tutors. Feedback may sometimes occur through tutorials, seminars or workshops, as determined by individual module organisers.
  • Demonstration of learning achievement is through formal examination, tests, coursework assignments, and project reports.
  • The International Sports Management MBA is made up core (i.e. compulsory) modules, in total accounting for 120 credits, and an elective theme within the International Sports Management module, accounting for an additional 30 credits.  Students develop the theme further as the subject base of their Sports Management Project module which accounts for another 30 credits and completes the 180 credits needed for the programme.

Entry Requirements

The International Sports Management MBA is an executive MBA. Successful applicants must hold either a Bachelor’s degree from a UK or recognised overseas University, membership of an approved chartered institute or a Diploma in Management Studies.

Three years’ relevant work experience is also required to ensure our high standard of classroom experience. Students should be able to evidence:

  • Substantial professional experience and achievements
  • Leadership potential
  • Self-motivation and commitment to personal development
  • Academic ability

The requirement for a degree or similar qualification is occasionally waived for those who possess significantly higher levels of experience and achievements – in which case an interview and test will normally be required.

English Language requirements for entry to the MBA programmes 2012-2013

  • The University’s requirement of a minimum IELTS result of 6.5 overall average with at least 6.0 in each component (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), or, a TOEFL result of 100 (internet-based) overall with no less than 21 in Listening, 22 in Reading, 23 in Speaking and 21 in Writing.
  • Applicants without the required IELTS or TOEFL result may be made a conditional offer such that they provide the University’s standard IELTS or TOEFL requirement as above.

Fees & Funding

The 2012/2013 tuition fees for the whole programme are: £28,000

An annual invoice of £14,000 will be issued during October of each year and there will be a payment deadline of mid-November. There will be the opportunity to make payments in instalments tri-annually (November, January and May). Scholarships

The School offers the following three scholarships, worth up to 40% of fees. Those who qualify for more than one of the below School scholarships will receive the scholarship that is highest in value only.

Gold Award

Value: 40% fees
Criteria: 2:1 or above bachelor’s degree plus 5 years' managerial experience. To apply, applicants must submit a short essay of around 2 to 3 pages (approximately 1,000 words), covering the relevance of MBA study to themselves and their career and how they will want to contribute to the MBA programme, both in the classroom and in the wider context.

Bronze Award

Value: 10% fees
Criteria: Applicants must be a Loughborough University Alumnus OR be party to a Group Discount of 2 or more delegates from the same organisation (Group Discounts must first be agreed with the MBA Programme Director). This scholarship will be applied automatically dependant on the criteria above.
