About the School
Why choose Loughborough?
Choosing the right university for you is one of the biggest decisions you will ever make. Studying at university involves a major investment of your time, commitment and money. Loughborough is the ideal place to make the most of that investment.
Here are 8 key reasons for making Loughborough your preferred choice:
1. Outstanding Reputation
Loughborough was named The Sunday Times ‘University of the Year’ for 2008-2009 and is consistently rated in the Top 5 in the National Student Survey.
Coupled with having won The Times Higher Education ‘Best Student Experience’ poll for five years’ running (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010) – an achievement no other university has even come close to matching – only confirms Loughborough's commitment to delivering outstanding programmes and a superb overall student experience.
2. Value for Money
The cost of living, both on the University campus and in the wider Loughborough area, is relatively inexpensive compared with many city-based universities and other university towns.
Competitively priced campus accommodation and good quality, low-cost local housing offers a variety of options to suit your lifestyle and resources. Loughborough's Student Accommodation Centre offers outstanding support to all students seeking housing.
Shops, clubs, entertainment venues, bookshops, cafes and catering outlets on campus provide all the services you need at a price you can afford, helping your money go further.
3. Excellent Career Prospects
Leading employers recognise the value of a Loughborough degree when recruiting for their graduate positions and as such Loughborough is amongst the best universities for graduate employment.
The quality of jobs our graduates are offered is also outstanding. Of those available for employment or study, 90% of the university’s 2010 graduates are in employment or further study, with 73% of these in 'higher graduate' level occupations, compared with the national average of 63%.
In addition, because of the superlative reputation the School of Business and Economics has with its placement companies, our graduates on average have a significantly higher starting salary than graduates of other business studies programmes.
4. Superlative Business, Industry and Commerce Connections
Unrivalled links with industry and the professions provide great financial and academic benefits for Loughborough students.
For instance, all of the School’s Business and Management undergraduate degrees are sandwich programmes with a salaried year-long placement in the third year. This gives our students the opportunity to ‘earn while you learn’ on a working placement with leading companies, gaining relevant and invaluable work experience at the same time.
Placement salaries depend on the company and the placement, but typically are around £14,000 – 15,000 over the year – with some as high as £30,000 for the year. Tuition fees are significantly reduced for the sandwich year. Students studying both Business and Economics also benefit from professional and industrial sponsored and accredited courses.
5. A Supportive and Safe Campus Environment
A single-site campus offers easy accessibility to all teaching facilities and to extensive student support, including professionally staffed support services such as careers guidance, a medical centre and counselling.
A regular bus shuttle service to town and the rail station means you’ll always be close to the shops, transport and home. A lively international student community further enhances what is a vibrant and integrated university environment.
“Loughborough campus is a friendly and convenient place to study, do sport and make friends. Highly recommended.” (2nd year undergraduate student)
6. Unrivalled Sports Facilities and Opportunities
Loughborough is internationally renowned for its unsurpassed student sport, but it also provides extensive sporting and fitness opportunities at all levels for all students, with more than 50 sports clubs run through the Students’ Union.
7. “The best Students’ Union in the country”
Our energetic, entrepreneurial Students’ Union is run by students for students, providing a focus and a base for an active social life.
With entertainment for all tastes and an extensive range of clubs and societies to suit every interest, our Union is unrivalled in the UK for its fundraising and volunteer work, providing opportunities for students to get involved and learn new skills.
Loughborough was awarded 'Best International Students' Union of the Year 2009' by the National Union of Students (NUS).
8. First-class Student Accommodation
Student accommodation at Loughborough University is excellent. Available both on and off campus, your choice of housing is wide ranging and easily some of the best offered at any UK university.
And if you are a new undergraduate student and confirm Loughborough as your first choice, we guarantee you a place in Halls for your first year.
Helping you come to Loughborough
A significant proportion of Loughborough University's tuition fees is invested in areas that directly benefit students, such as hiring more academic and support staff and investing in enhanced learning and teaching facilities.
We want to encourage good students from all backgrounds to be able to come to the School of Business and Economics, to benefit from the great opportunities here. We are introducing, therefore, a clear, generous and accessible support package to help make this possible.
