Dr Balanov is awarded an EPSRC grant

Dr Alexander Balanov was recently awarded an EPSRC grant, which will support the collaboration between Loughborough University, the University of Nottingham and the University of Leeds in development acoustoelectric methods for the generation, manipulation and detection of terahertz (THz) radiation.

The team from three universities will carry out a 3-year programme of integrated experimental and theoretical modelling to investigate the interactions of THz frequency acoustic waves with electromagnetic waves in semiconductor nanostructures. This work will enable the creation of new acoustoelectric technologies, based on the high- frequency control of electronic processes in semiconductor nanostructures using strain waves, for the generation, manipulation and detection of microwave/THz signals at much higher frequencies than achievable using current acoustoelectric methods.
