Watch our new industrial placement video

For undergraduate students the value of a year spent on professional placement cannot be overstated. Taking on a real job with real responsibilities, whether it be for a major international organisation or SME gives students hands-on experience and "soft skills" that help them stand out in the competitive market for graduate jobs. The placement experience also helps students find out more about the industry they want to work in, test out a career and build a network of contacts that could be useful when seeking opportunities after graduating. Businesses increasingly use the placement year as part of their recruitment and selection process and students often secure employment before their final year.

For this reason, the Department of Physics offers the opportunity of a year-long placement on all its undergraduate degree courses. To highlight the benefits of a placement we caught up with student Simon Corah, currently midway through his year with GL Noble Denton, a world class technical service provider for the oil and gas industry, and graduate Hazel Colbourne. Hazel went on to work full-time for GL Noble Denton following a successful placement with the organisation.
