"Magnetic phenomena in correlated 5d and Dirac materials with large spin-orbit coupling"
Abstract: Third Row (5d) transition-metal oxides, such as iridates and osmates, exhibit a wide range of intriguing correlated quantum phenomena. These have been explained as a result of the large spin–orbit interaction which causes an effective band narrowing and thus magnifies the strength of electronic repulsions. Topological features in the band structure are also important in some cases. In this talk I shall introduce some of the interesting phenomena found recently in 5dtransition-metal oxides (iridates and osmates) and in Dirac materials containing Bi together with transition-metal ions. I shall present structural, electrical and magnetic data which reveal a variety of interesting phase transitions, and I shall present the results of neutron and synchrotron X-ray scattering experiments which have been performed to search for a microscopic understanding of the different phases.
