Has Europe unmade France? Exceptionalism, internationalism and (national) identity in question

Contemporary France is a founder member of today’s European Union and one of its most troubled leading member states. Mainstream political rhetoric deems there to be virtually no join between French and European affairs, yet the reality is that economically, socially and politically, the question of France’s membership of the EU is disruptive and vexatious.  Again and again, French politicians have asked: ‘can we make Europe without unmaking France (faire l’Europe sans défaire la France)?
