This year’s Sir Nevill Mott Lecture was given by Professor Alexei A. Abrikosov (Argonne National Laboratory) on Wednesday 7th May 2003 on the topic of
Superconductivity: history and current status.
He reviewed the history of superconductivity, from its discovery in 1911 to recent developments. These included high-temperature superconductivity and the surprising discovery of MgB2. After an extensive and detailed account of historic and recent developments in the field of superconductivity, speaker and audience retired to tea and biscuits and even more discussions on superconductivity in the Physics department.
