Background

I am a Chartered Engineer with extensive industrial and academic experience. My main expertise is in computer based information and knowledge systems for product design and manufacture. My research is now strongly linked to Product Lifecycle Management systems but is focused on the modelling of manufacturing knowledge such that it can be shared effectively across design and manufacture, across multiple systems and throughout the supply chain.  In recent years this has involved work on product modelling, manufacturing capability modelling, multi-context feature and product family models, knowledge reuse, and also the application of foundation ontologies for knowledge sharing and interoperability. These have been targeted at applications in process planning, design for manufacture and CADCAM integration and have been focused on the machining, injection moulding and assembly processes.

I have held a number of government funded grants plus industrially funded projects totalling over £5M and published over 70 journal and conference papers as well as having had some 11 PhD graduates study under my supervision. I collaborate with many experts both in the UK and overseas, but I have particularly close links with Bath, NIST, Ecole Centrale de Lille, Toronto University and UNAM in Mexico.  I  also contribute to ISO TC184 SC4, which is concerned with industrial automation standards, as a UK manufacturing expert and have recently become involved with the EU INTEROP-Vlab.
