Brief History

The AMSTC was formed in 1990, and the original work was centred on CNC technology and flexible machining facilities. This work was then extended to the applications of simulation in design and operational planning of such facilities and system integration issues, in particular those related to the planning and control of manufacturing cells and workstations. One of the recent main theme in our work is the application of Sustainable Product Design and Manufacturing, with particular emphasis on Environmentally Conscious Manufacturing. The AMSTC has been involved in a large number of National and European research programmes.

The current projects are based on :-

  • Application of new paradigms such as team-based manufacturing and holonic systems to support distributed manufacture
  • Design and specification of web based information systems to support product end-of-life management
  • Design and operational issues related to mass customisation of the products
  • Next generation of intelligent CNC machines through the application of STEP-NC
