Alastair Boyes

Full profile

I graduated in 2007 with a BEng in Automotive Materials and now work for a research and development consultancy called MERL (Materials Engineering Research Laboratory), based in Hitchin. MERL is a leading independent provider of innovative engineering solutions in polymer engineering, serving a wide range of industry sectors, including the oil and gas, aerospace, automotive, medical, rail and general engineering industries.

My role as a Materials Scientist mainly involves the development and testing of elastomers, thermoplastics and thermoset composites for the oil and gas and aerospace industries. Along with the technical side to my job I am also a Project Manager on small to medium size contracts, which involves everything from winning contracts, to liaising with clients and report writing.

My time at Loughborough gave me the confidence to go straight into the workplace and work comfortably within teams of engineers, as the course is specifically designed to meet the needs of today’s materials engineering industry.
