Ceramics Research Group

Co-ordinator: Professor Jon Binner

Member: Dr Xujin Bao, Dr B. Vaidhyanathan

Introduction

The Ceramics Research Group, formed in 1998, is involved in a wide variety of collaborative projects with industry and academic institutions, both within the UK and internationally. The focus of the activity is the generation of both the necessary scientific understanding and the required engineering solutions for the development of processing routes that display technical and/or financial advantages over existing processes and which yield new or improved advanced ceramics, including nanostructured ceramics, glasses and ceramic matrix composites.

The group has access to a range of facilities to support the research. Apart from the specialist ceramic processing equipment available within the groups' dedicated laboratories, there is a wide range of materials characterisation equipment within the department including SEM, TEM, STEM, microanalysis, EPMA, SIMS, XPS, XRD and thermal characterisation that are used to support the work. In addition we have state-of-the-art powder and suspension characterisation techniques.
