Background
Jon attained a BSc and PhD from the Department of Ceramics at Leeds University. He then spent a year as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of California in Los Angeles in the USA. Following his return to the UK he spent 4 years as a Lecturer at Leeds University before moving to Nottingham University in 1989. After one year at Brunel University as Professor of Materials Engineering and Head of Department, Jon joined Loughborough University in 2000 as Professor of Ceramic Materials and became Head of Department in 2005. He is now Dean for the new School of Aeronautical, Automotive, Chemical and Materials Engineering which formed in Aug 2011.

Outline of main research interests
The generation of the necessary scientific understanding and required engineering solutions for the development of process routes that display technical and/or economic advantages over existing techniques, yielding new or improved ceramic-based materials, from nanostructured to traditional ceramics and including ceramic-based composites.
