Background
Barry graduated in Engineering Materials from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne (1978) and continued to study for MSc (by research) at the same institution. Following three years industrial research, he joined Loughborough University (Institute of Polymer Technology) in 1982 as Lecturer, then promoted to Senior Lecturer and has also been Teaching Coordinator and Management Group member since 2000.

Outline of main research interests
The main focus is practical and simulative polymer processing and properties of thermoplastics that govern processing, structure and in-service performance of products. Much of this research has been applications-oriented, with special consideration to methods by which processing and performance of new product groups can be enhanced.
