Background
Ali read for a degree in Materials Engineering at Queen Mary College, University of London between 1978 – 1981. He went on to study for a PhD in Materials (Fracture Mechanics) from 1981- 1986 also at Queen Mary College, University of London. Between 1986 - 1989 he held the position of Post-doctoral Research Assistant in the Chemical Engineering and Chemical Technology Department, Imperial College, University of London. He then took up a position of Post-doctoral Research Assistant in the Cavendish Laboratory, Department of Physics, University of Cambridge. In 1990 Ali became an Upper Senior Research Scientist in the Engineering Research and Design Group, Tun Abdul Razak Laboratory, MRPRA, Hertford. In 1996 Ali moved to a Lectureship at the Department of Materials at Loughborough University.
