Undergraduate programmes: Entry requirements for 2012

UK Qualifications

For applicants taking A-Levels, offers are in the range AAB-AAA from 3 A-Levels, including grade A in Mathematics in all cases. Applications from individuals offering either Further Mathematics A Level, Further Maths AS Level at grade A, Merit in Edexcel AEA (Advanced Extension Award), or grade 2 in Cambridge STEP (Sixth Term Examination Paper) in Maths are viewed favourably; none of these are required, but they will all be good preparation for university mathematics, and may be included in an offer.

If you want to study Further Maths but your school or college is unable to provide tuition, you can find tuition through the Further Mathematics Support Programme. Help with preparation for AEA and STEP is provided by MEI.

All A-Level subjects except General Studies will be accepted. However, the three A-Levels must include one non-Mathematics subject; the entry requirements cannot be fulfilled with grades in Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Additional Further Mathematics.

Applicants with only two A-Levels, but with two AS-Levels in other subjects, will be considered on an individual basis.

For joint courses there are no specific A-Level subject requirements for the non-Mathematics part of the course, although a qualification in Economics is useful if you are taking Mathematics with Economics or Financial Mathematics.

For Scottish students with SQA qualifications, offers will specify grade A in Advanced Higher Mathematics. A second Advanced Higher will normally also be required, usually at grade A (depending on the grades already obtained in Highers); but applicants with only one Advanced Higher will be considered on an individual basis.

We also make offers to students with a variety of other Level 3 qualifications such as BTEC, but there must be a Mathematics qualification at least equivalent to A-Level grade A. Mature students should note that an Access to Higher Education Diploma is only sufficient for entry to our degree programmes by itself if it is a Mathematics Diploma. Open University units MST121 and MS221 provide sufficient mathematical background for our degree programmes. Please contact the Admissions Tutor to discuss the suitability of any qualifications.

All applicants require GCSE English at grade C or above, or an equivalent English language qualification.

International Qualifications

For applicants taking the International Baccalaureate, offers will specify an overall score of 36 including 6 in HL Mathematics.

Applications from international students with other qualifications will be considered on an individual basis. In all cases, offers will require applicants to demonstrate a similar level of achievement to our entrants with A-Levels.

All applicants require an English language qualification. Acceptable qualifications include: GCSE English at grade C or above; IELTS 6.5, with at least 6.0 in each component; or any of the qualifications in this list.
