The Status of Health Librarianship & Libraries in Ireland (SHELLI)
Project staff: Dr Janet Harrison, Department of Information Science; Claire Creaser, Helen Greenwood and LISU
Duration: December 2010 – October 2011
Description
Health librarianship and libraries in Ireland have been well researched over the past 15 years and standards of service are acknowledged and established. The current standards for Irish health care library and information services were first documented in 1993 in the standards for Irish health care libraries published by the Library Association of Ireland, and the subsequent work in 1995 cemented the standards. During the 1990s and into the new decade, several more publications addressed this area, and stressed the need for access to high-quality current information in the health environment for both professionals and consumers. This research into the current status of health librarianship and libraries in Ireland is timely; it is now six years since the second edition of the Standards for Irish Healthcare Library and Information Services was published. The timing of the research is also in line with the international perspective.
The project will investigate the current status of health librarianship and libraries in Ireland against this background, and include a review of international best practice, interviews with key stakeholders, and a survey and focus group of health librarians in Ireland.
