International study on the impact of copyright law on digital preservation

Funded by Joint Information Systems Committee

Project Head: Adrienne Muir

Duration: 1 June 2007- 31 May 2008

Description: In order to gain in-depth understanding of how digital preservation is hindered (or improved) by copyright and legal deposit laws in different countries, four international organisations, the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) in the UK, the US Library of Congress' National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIPP), The OAK Law Project in Australia and the Surf Foundation in the Netherlands, have decided to join forces and carry out a collective study. The ultimate goal is to make recommendations on legislative or other changes which are needed to bring copyright law into harmony with digital preservation needs in the reporting countries. All the country studies will be synthesised in a summary report, including an analysis of common issues among the countries surveyed, and make joint recommendations for further studies and /or legislative changes. The outcome of the study will then be presented at an international workshop, sponsored by JISC, NDIIPP and possibly the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and other partners.

JISC has funded Loughborough University to write the UK report and to create the joint summary report.
