Scoping study for a registry of archived electronic journals

Funded by Joint Information Systems Committee

Project Head: Adrienne Muir, project partners Rightscom Ltd

Duration: 12 September 2007- 1 January 2008

Description: The study has two aims: to investigate the feasibility of, and scope the requirements for, a registry of archived electronic journals. The study will comprise desk research, will be augmented and clarified through interviews with stakeholders. The study team will formulate some preliminary recommendations on the scope of the registry and the most important functionality it will need to provide. Also included in the interim report will be draft scenarios and use cases derived from the interviews and desk research: these will help to illustrate the scope and requirements. They will also form the basis of the final research phase, a series of three workshops. The workshops will focus on deepening and validating the information gathered from the desk research and interviews. The Final Report will include:

  • An overview of the problem domain
  • Identification of relevant stakeholder groups and their requirements
  • Identify benefits of the registry for different user communities (including machine users)
  • Identify risks to the different communities of continuing without a registry
  • The registry in the context of the evolving JISC Information Environment
  • Existing and recently proposed solutions
  • Identification of the types of data that could be held
  • Information on where data is currently held
  • Applicable metadata standards and descriptions of data
  • Proposed architecture for a registry
  • How the registry could be managed and operated
  • Potential hosts or operators for the registry
  • Cost projections (money/time/effort)
  • Models for economic sustainability (business models)
