Understanding Information Literacies - Mark Hepworth

This was a JISC-funded project. Qualitative methods and “sense-making technique” were used to help identify information intensive situations and associated skills and knowledge. This led to the development of a model that could be used to structure professional development strategies.

Information Management & Interaction in Healthcare and Beyond

A number of projects concerning people's need for and interaction with data, information and knowledge have been undertaken. These have included an investigation of technology facilitated personalisation and information provision; the identification of information needs of specific communities including: people with severe learning difficulties, people with multiple sclerosis (funded by the MSTrust), informal carers (funded by the NHS and Leicestershire Social Services), social workers (funded by NHS), university students and school children.

These studies have deployed a range of qualitative and quantitative research techniques and have led to changes in information provision for specific communities. Studies with children have resulted in planned changes to the national curriculum and at the tertiary level have resulted in new approaches to fostering independent learning skills in the United Kingdom and overseas.

Inequalities in ICT Access in FE and HE - Louise Cooke

JISC-funded study into inequalities in access to ICT for staff in UK FE and HE Institutions. This demonstrated that certain categories of staff (e.g. cleaning, catering, estates) miss out on important corporate information that is now routinely disseminated electronically. Information about the project and access to the final report can be found at http://www.jisc.ac.uk/news/stories/2006/12/news_access.aspx.
