Their influential report, "Analogue to Digital Switchover: Human Aspects of Adoption", proposing strategies for promoting social inclusion and enhancing public access to information, has been published at www.digitaltelevision.gov.uk and used as a basis for the UK Digital Television Action Plan. Informing Digital Futures: Strategies for Citizen EngagementThis book, authored by Leela Damodaran and Wendy Olphert, reflects decades of research and pro-active endeavour to achieve socially useful and people-centred ICT systems. Historically, public participation in planning/decision-making and technically-driven IT systems development have been parallel universes. For the first time these are brought together, in concept and in practise. ICT applications in public sector use should be designed as sociotechnical systems: they involve technical, human and social components. Citizen engagement in defining and developing such systems is crucial to their success. The rewards of using this approach are significant and attractive – in social and economic terms. |
