Personal profile
With an initial background in applied psychology I have subsequently addressed a wide range of research topics are concerned with the design and introduction of new technologies.
On joining HUSAT in 1986 I spent 6 years working on projects concerned with electronic text and digital support for scientific communication (eJournals etc.). During the 1990's my focus switched to driver support systems and the rapid expansion of advanced vehicle systems (e.g. adaptive cruise control in the Prometheus programme, 1991-94) that are now impacting on the driving task.
I also led a DfT funded project that assessed the potential of driving simulators in the testing of safety critical systems. I led Loughborough's contribution to the Foresight / DfT funded Road Traffic Advisor (TRA) project between 1996 and 2000. This was the first major UK demonstration trial involving two-way communication between vehicles and the infrastructure to provide enhanced traffic information for drivers and network managers.
Following the merger of HUSAT and ICE to form ESRI in 2000 I managed an EC FP6 project (RoadSense) that attempted to develop a standard approach to system evaluation in on-road trials. During 2002-4 I worked with Ricability to define the ergonomic requirements that would inform the design of future accessible taxis. From 2004 - 2010 I was Director of ESRI.
