Personal profile

John McCardle PhD CEng MIED MIET FHEA is a Senior lecturer in the Department of Design and Technology, Loughborough University.

Since April 1999 he has been responsible for lecturing in electronics and computing for the BA/BSc courses in Industrial Design and Technology and Postgraduate modules in electronic product design. He is presently Programme Leader for the BSc undergraduate degree in Product Design and Technology, which was launched in October 2006.

John started his career studying Control Engineering whilst an engineering craft apprentice with the Ministry of Defence in the UK before becoming a design engineer in 1982. After graduating in Industrial Design from Brunel University in 1991 he began a research programme aimed at integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into automatic control systems using multiple sensor technology, graduating with a PhD in 1997.

As a founding member of the Neural Applications Group and later as an associate member of the Centre for Neural Computing Applications (CNCA) he gained considerable experience in the research and development of AI techniques for industrial applications and has extensive experience in DSP systems, AI modelling techniques, audible acoustic data analysis and real-time control applications.

He has also been involved with many projects associated with applied AI including machine health monitoring, surveillance, and diagnostics. From 1997 to 1999, as a member of the Centre for Intelligent Systems, University of Wales, Aberystwyth, he acted as the European Network Manager for the Network of Excellence in Model-Based and Qualitative Reasoning Systems, coordinating research into symbolic AI systems.

At Loughborough he built a strong working relationship with Motorola with whom he received a joint patent in 2002, has acted as external reviewer on vocational qualifications in engineering for the QCA, and various design related conferences.

Teaching

Research

John contributes to two principle research areas as an active member of both the Design Practice Research Group (DPRG) and the Design Education Research Group (DERG) at Loughborough University.

As part of DPRG his research interests focus on the cognitive, psychological and physiological effects encountered in the act of designing and the nature, philosophy and culture of design, including design knowledge, design intelligence and design decision making.

Within design education the focus is on the knowledge, social acceptance and teaching of technology and the relationship between technology and designing. John is also a member of the Design Research Society and its Special Interest Group in Design Pedagogy.
