Personal profile
Industrial experience
5 years in product and architectural design and engineering with responsibilities for design, manufacture, project management and design office management.
Has worked with many clients, contractors, engineers and architects on major construction projects throughout the UK, including Heathrow Terminal 5; Great Wharf Road Bridge, Canary Wharf; Hicking Building, Nottingham; The Peepul Centre, Leicester; Cancer Research Institute, Cambridge; Regent Court, Royal Leamington Spa; Dover Street Market, London.
Earlier experience in the manufacturing sector spans hand-held electronic products and automotive engineering, working for a number of companies including GE Druck and Toyota.
Research contracts
3 month research contract with the Vehicle Ergonomics Group working with the late Mark Porter, Keith Case and Martin Freer on validating research in human modelling and simulation.
1 year as a Visiting Academic at the Wolfson School supporting doctoral research in Interactive Evolutionary Design.
Previous research post (20 months, 2006-07) with the Department of Civil and Building Engineering, Loughborough, working on the IMMPREST project (off-site construction) with Alistair Gibb and Christine Pasquire.
Degree qualifications
BEng (Hons) Product Design and Manufacture, Dept. of Manufacturing Engineering, Loughborough University.
PhD Evolutionary Computer-Aided Design, Wolfson School of Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering, Loughborough University. Supervisors Keith Case and Bob Wood.
Teaching
- Foundation Technology, Electronics and Mechanics (2008-2010)
- Final Year Dissertation Tutor (2008-2010)
Successfully completed the STARS programme (July 2009). Enrolled on the Associate Teaching Course (ATC) 2009-2011.
Research
Working within the Design Practice Research Group supporting and developing the group's wide-ranging research activities. This includes the development of research proposals from conception to submission, identifying opportunities and strategies for new research areas, supporting contract and doctoral research in the department, and fostering academic and industrial collaboration both within and outside of the university.
Current funded research projects
- Principle Investigator on the evoShape project
- Co-investigator on the FitSplint project (see news post, and item in 2008 annual report)
- Principle researcher on a project developing capability in the management of practice-based research
Personal research interest and expertise
Interactive Evolutionary Design for which I am regularly seeking funding to further exploit this technology, and where I am particularly interested in working with other interested parties, both commercial and academic. Recent Papers and presentations are available on the EFD website.
PhD supervision
Virginia Zhang: Rapid Manufacturing and Sculpture.
External Responsibilities
Program Committee, EvoInteraction, European Workshops on Interactive Evolution and Humanized Computational Intelligence, EVO*.
