Personal profile

After graduating from Brunel University in 1985 with a BSc in the Special Engineering Programme, Dr Campbell worked as a design engineer, first in Ford Motor Company, and later in the Rover Group.

Most of his design experience in both companies was with internal combustion engines. In 1989, he was appointed as a Senior Teaching Fellow for CAD/CAM at the University of Warwick. This gave him the opportunity to raise his awareness of CAD/CAM technology and practices.

He remained in this position for four years, during which time, he undertook a part-time MSc degree by research. In 1993, he obtained a lectureship at the University of Nottingham where he was a member of the Rapid Prototyping Research Group.

His principle area of research was the integration of rapid prototyping into the design process and he gained his PhD in 1998. He moved to Loughborough University in October 2000. His publications include four edited books, twenty academic journal articles and over sixty other research outputs.

Research

Dr Campbell's primary area of research is the effective use of computer technologies within product design. This includes the use of innovative CAD interfaces (e.g. haptic modelling), using rapid prototyping to increase user participation in the design process and developing a methodology for designers to follow when designing products for additive manufacturing.

Industrial involvement in this research has come from Procter and Gamble, Jaguar Cars, Frito Lay and DaimlerChrysler, amongst others. Academic partnerships have been developed with, the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, the University of Maribor and the Vaal University of Technology.

Funding sources have included EPSRC, the Royal Society, EC Framework V, the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission and the National Research Foundation of South Africa. Dr Campbell is the leader of the Design Practice Research Group (link) and as such seeks to encourage and support the research activities of other members, especially those who are newer to this research field.
