Dr Guy Bingham completing a HND in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Wales in 2000 before joining Loughborough University where he graduated with a BEng (Hons) in Product Design and Manufacture in 2003.
He then accepted a Research Associate position within the Wolfson School at Loughborough University working for the Additive Manufacturing Research Group (AMRG), and commenced doctoral research investigating design opportunities in Rapid Prototyping (RP) and Additive Manufacturing (AM).
After gaining his PhD in 2007 within the area of AM textile structure design and modelling, he remained at the AMRG as a Post-doctoral researcher investigating the design implication of Additive Manufacturing. During this period he designed many landmark artefacts showcasing the design potential and freedoms of AM techniques, including footwear, textiles, personal protective equipment and the World’s first conformal AM textile garment.
In 2008, Dr Bingham accepted a Senior Lecturers position in Product/Industrial design at De Montfort University and became the programme leader for the BSc (Hons) Product Design undergraduate degree. During this period he successfully led the accreditation of the BSc Product design programme by the Institute of Engineering Designers (IED) and was a core member of the academic team responsible for the design and validation of the new four year MDes Design Products programme.
In 2010 Dr Bingham co-founded the first international symposium in Digital Art and Design and has exhibited digital sculptures internationally.
In 2010, Dr Bingham returned to Loughborough University as an Lecturer within the New Design School and is continuing his research addressing the design opportunities of Additive manufacturing.

Research

Group activities include identification of joint paper opportunities, joint research proposals and joint research student supervision.
Dr Bingham’s current research focuses are the design opportunities in Additive Manufacturing and Rapid Prototyping. Using existing and bespoke 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) modelling techniques, Additive Manufacturing presents real benefits to the designer and design process for the creation of organic, complex and optimised objects. The research explores both the CAD modelling techniques and systems used to create such geometries while also investigation and developing novel applications of Additive Manufacturing.
A novel application of AM is the capability to manufacture textile type structures that not only incorporate drape and free-movement but also enable a step-change in achievable geometric complexity over conventional fibre-based textiles - these are now known as AM Textiles and approximate to the modern-day equivalent of Medieval chain-maille. However, due to the application of AM techniques, the level of geometric complexity now available is virtually limitless - this is in direct contrast to the application of singular metal rings in historical chain-maille examples. Additionally, the resolution capabilities of AM techniques allow the design and manufacture of chain-maille type structures at the Meso and Micro-level (5 to less than 1mm) in a variety of materials including metals, polymers, ceramics and composites.
Previous research in this highly novel area has focused on the efficient generation of the 3D data required for manufacture only. Having addressed these issues, the opportunity now exists for the integration of emerging AM technologies, engineering-based testing/analysis and innovative design, for the realisation of high-performance AM Textiles for demanding applications. However, the integration of such principles also enables the potential to exploit AM Textiles for additional applications, ranging from fashion and jewellery to healthcare and smart applications.
