Personal profile

Dr Abby Paterson graduated from Loughborough University in 2008 with a BSc. (Hons) in Industrial Design and Technology. Having developed a keen interest in Additive Manufacturing ( AM ) and Computer Aided Design (CAD) during her time as an undergraduate, Abby accepted a postgraduate doctoral research position within the Loughborough Design School in 2009. Her PhD focused on the exploration of CAD strategies to create custom-made wrist splints using AM.

During her time as a doctoral researcher, Abby also carried out a number of contractor-based / consultancy projects in product design, CAD support and three-dimensional ( 3D ) laser scanning.  Projects ranged from product development to support EvoShape ( http://www.evoshape.co.uk/ ), through to scanning scaled automotive models for aerodynamic analysis.

In 2012, Abby accepted a lectureship within the School of Materials at the University of Manchester, specialising in CAD within the Design Fashion Business group. Abby was also a member of the biomaterials and imaging research groups within the School.  In 2013, she received her PhD, and in January 2014, Abby returned to the Loughborough Design School as a Lecturer in Industrial Design and Technology.  She is now a member of the Design Practice Research Group (DPRG) and the Additive Manufacturing Research Group (AMRG) across Loughborough University.

In addition to her interests in CAD, AM and 3D laser scanning, Abby’s research interests also involve the exploration of generative algorithms, open-sourcing and medical product design.
