Personal profile

From 1999-2002 Clare was employed as an Ergonomist at the Health and Safety Laboratory conducting research and providing expert advice to HSE inspectors and producing HSE ergonomics guidance.

Clare was a member of the writing team revising (HSG60)- 'Work-related Upper Limb Disorders: a Guide to Prevention'. Clare has considerable experience in conducting ergonomic workstation and workplace assessments, providing expert witness statements for HSE and advice on a range of topics from musculoskeletal disorders and manual handling to the design of unattended systems such as petrol stations and sun tanning facilities.

While working at ESRI Clare has continued her work in the area of musculoskeletal disorders. Projects include; assessing the layout and design of train driver cabs, assessing the stability and physical demands of physically disabled drivers while driving, assessing the forces for opening taxi doors by older users and investigating the fit of seatbelts used in coaches and minibuses by children.

Clare has also worked on a range of projects that have required her knowledge of cognition and vision. Clare has worked on projects investigating the costs benefits of the use of retro reflective tape on the rear of HGVs, buses and coaches and in the development of high visibility garments to be used by the police.

Clare has recently completed work for IOSH investigating the effectiveness of training in the application of checklist based risk assessment for assessing upper limb disorders in the workplace.
