Transport Safety Research Centre

Key interests
Road Safety Policy
The Centre conducts a broad range of research relating to specific road, vehicle and road user studies that address specific safety policies at national level or wider. It has also a very strong record in developing safety resources for application across the policy spectrum.
Centre researchers now have considerable experience in constructing safety data systems and road safety observatories to present data and knowledge in the most effective manner to specialist and non-specialist policy makers.
Featured projects
In its 2001 White paper on Transport the European Commission decided to implement a European Road Safety Observatory to bring together safety data and state of the art knowledge to support road safety policy-making.
The task was given to the SafetyNet project, which was funded under the 6th Framework Programme and co-ordinated by the TSRC.
Working with a large group of 21 other institutes and a total budget of €13m the TSRC was able to develop the structure of the observatory and establish protocols for a wide range of safety data. The final project outcomes have now been incorporated into the website of DG-MOVE.
Subsequent development of the Observatory is now continuing within the EU supported DaCoTA project. The Team again co-ordinates the project which will develop the link between the road safety evidence base and safety policy-making as well as developing a new European infrastructure for in-depth investigations and naturalistic driving observations.
