Transport Safety Research Centre

Key interests
Infrastructure Safety Research
Highway engineering has a considerable capability to reduce traffic collisions and a team within the Centre conducts wide ranging research into ways to improve trunk, local roads.
Crash performance, location and installation are important factors affecting the safety of road restraints and researchers in the Centre have been able to develop new performance and construction standards.
More about this key interest
The team has uniquely been able to bring the experience gained from the in-depth accident causation research together with road safety audit approaches to develop new ways of improving highway safety in rapidly emerging economies such as Brazil and India.
The researchers are also able to apply the knowledge gained to a very local level and are conducting research into road safety on large private sites such as business and industrial sites.
Featured projects
The centre is conducting several research projects related to the traffic infrastructure.
The RISER (Road Infrastructure in Europe) project was supported by the European Commission under the 5th Framework Research Programme.
Researchers in the TSRC worked with other international partners to compare the performance and installation standards of road restraints in several EU Member States. The outcomes of the research produced best practise guidelines and have fed into the development of new road restraint standards.
Further research into the infrastructure safety needs of emerging economies is being conducted under the EU funded SaferBrain where the Centre is working with research institutes in Brazil and India. The objectives of the project are to develop new road safety management methods appropriate for rapidly emerging economies.
The integration of new transport infrastructure developments in relation to local and regional planning will be evaluated and the team will develop new safety management tools to ensure transport safety needs are fully integrated.
Researchers in the Centre have also recently completed a full traffic safety audit of the Loughborough University campus. Utilising state of the art road safety audit methods the team has observed the range of conflicts that occur and has produced recommendations for changes to the local road system.
