Supporting British Furniture Manufacture
14 February 2011
Loughborough Design School is collaborating with a leading British manufacturer to expand its range of furniture. Lloyd Loom of Spalding produce high quality, handmade furniture using the Lloyd Loom process which combines woven twisted paper and wire on a solid beech-wood frame.
Unlike most imported furniture of this type, each piece is individually handmade by craftsmen in a wide range of styles and colours. Whilst their furniture is tremendously strong and will last for a generation indoors, the company have identified a gap in the market for high quality outdoor Lloyd Loom furniture.
The collaboration is being conducted through a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP), a government subsidised scheme that enables companies to access the University’s expertise. Sharan Kaur, a recent industrial design graduate will lead the project to identify innovative solutions that will enable the company to develop a range of outdoor products to the same high standards of quality and longevity as their existing range.
The Loughborough Design School is supporting the project through product development expertise provided by Dr. Richard Bibb whilst specialist materials expertise is being provided by Dr. Dick Heath from the University’s Materials Department.
