Research Interests

(1) Quaternary environmental change, luminescence applications and science-based archaeology

Quaternary environmental change focusing on the nature and timing of change with particular focus on aeolian activity (sand dune building, dust (loess) deposition). I have worked on both the development and the application of luminescence techniques (TL, OSL, IRSL) to sediments. Luminescence techniques have, for example, enabled us to resolve the chronology of palaeolithic sites in Pakistan, Late Quaternary fluvial-aeolian interactions in the western USA, and the interaction between NAO (North Atlantic Oscillation) driven storminess and coastal sand movement and dune-building in Portugal. Recent projects include AHRC-funded investigations of the Roman archaeology and geomorphology of the Laurentine Shore (Rome's Maritime Facade), and a British Academy small grant: ‘This restless enemy of all fertility’: storms, sand invasion and coastal management strategies in Britain and Ireland 1700-1950.


 

(2) Land degradation and extreme events in the Mediterranean

This work focuses on contemporary geomorphic processes of soil erosion and landsliding and the relationship between extreme rainfall events and the land surface responses over the period of meteorological records for southern and central Italy.  Current work has linked the patterns of erosion and landsliding to changes in the NAO over the period 1951-2000, while the detailed investigation of badland processes and landforms has informed work on longer-term landscape evolution.
