The Trees

Part of the site has been restored to woodland with the planting of large numbers of saplings. This reflects the pre-mining landscape of Spring Wood (now "Rising Wood"), an area that had been a mix of mature oak woodland, mixed conifers and birch scrub.

The land had been gripped to prevent soil compaction and the trees planted on the top of the ridges formed by this process. The trees planted form a mix of hardwoods and conifers (Allowing for individual species failure or changing market demand). The choice of species was part determined by what had grown well on the site before and in part by the species adapted to the new conditions (Alder to fix Nitrogen on the poor soil and Poplar to cope with the water logged conditions).
