The Temporary, Seasonal Migration of Elite Cricket Professionals: Career Progression and International Migration
International migration is a significant process in the globalized world, with increased spatial mobility evident for diverse social groups. Within this context it is argued that overseas experience has become a necessary pre-requisite for career progression in certain highly-skilled occupations. Using a case study of elite, cricket professionals this research will explore the relationship between temporary, seasonal, international migration and career trajectories. This sporting case study provides an opportunity to combine geographical research on migration with theories and concepts from sociology and the sociology of sport, for example. Using the work of the sociologist Norbert Elias and his Figurational Perspective, as well as previous migration research from other disciplines, this study hopes to highlight the benefits of multi-disciplinary migration research.
