9. Rock core sample from beneath the Three Gorges Dam, Prof. Nick Clifford

The dam site of the Three Gorges Project is located at Sandouping in the middle section of the Xiling Gorge, with a granite rock foundation. The rock core was drilled out from under the dam foundation and consists of hornblende-biotite plagioclase granite of the Proterozoic era. It formed about 800 million years ago.

This sample was presented to Professor Nick Clifford, who hosted a visit from the Chinese Academy of Sciences to explore international collaboration on water resources research.
