My undergraduate dissertation in Human Geography combined two areas of research: cultural geography and feminist geography. It explored debates around gender and ‘automobility’. The central aim was to examine the representation of female identities in televised car advertising in different national contexts.

The still digital images displayed here from notable adverts are a snapshot of some of the 800 adverts that comprised my data collection and analysis. These images, which represent a variety of female identities (from the slogan to 'defy labels' to a sexually objectified representation of a 'pink Barbie doll in distress' stranded on the side of the road), were used to discuss the geographies of these ideas; specifically how they vary between nations and the contradictions in how car advertisements represent female identities.
