15. World scout badges, Dr Sarah Mills

Scouting is the largest youth organisation in the world with over 31 million members across 216 countries and territories - represented here by a selection of world scout badges.

My research in Human Geography explores youth organisations – including the Scout Movement - as spaces of citizenship, identity and belonging at the local, national and global scale. I examine the geographies of youth organisations and their cultural, social, political and historical dynamics. I have used youth organisations as geographical case-studies to explore themes of gender, religion and citizenship in young people’s lives – in both historical and contemporary contexts. This work has also revealed the wider role of the voluntary sector in shaping young people’s everyday lives and the place of volunteering within different societies over time.
