12. Global and British citizen passport covers, Dr Sophie Cranston

Are British people who migrate ‘expats,’ ‘migrants’ or ‘global citizens?’

My research addresses this question by looking at the relationship between migration and global identities. It examines how British migrants, by virtue of their passport, are privileged in comparison to other migrants. It thinks about how British people use the term expat. But, as well as the exclusivities of British migrants, my research explores the development of a global mindset in transnational business organisations and how global citizenship is understood by young people in international schools So, my research gets at some key geographical questions: how can we live in an increasingly globalised world? How do we challenge negative perceptions associated with migration and celebrate our diverse societies?
