German 3

This course is designed for students who already have good knowledge of the German language but who may not have used the language for some time and therefore need their confidence boosting. They may for example have done a GCSE but it may have been a while ago and their university course, professional or personal lives have since made it necessary for them to refresh their knowledge.

The course revolves around spoken conversation and we follow the Deutsch Plus 2 coursebook. Additionally we watch films and use the internet to familiarise ourselves with aspects of German culture.

German 4

The class has an informal character and emphasises oral skills (speaking and listening). The aim of the class is not to learn technical terms relating to academic or other specific areas but everyday German. Authentic texts, e.g. excerpts from books or newspapers, are used to improve vocabulary and usage, enabling the students to discuss the topic in question. Written skills such as note-taking are practised as well, and though some longer texts may be produced, no formal essays will be written in class. Listening skills are often practised using songs or video clips.

Students often feel that they need some revision of grammar. This will mostly be completed in the first term.

Examples of topics covered include:

The choice of topics will be discussed at the beginning of the course, and then again in the 10th lesson after a review of the first term, so there is a chance for students to have an input.

Although homework is not a requirement of the course students will gain greater satisfaction if they are able and prepared to invest some time on study between sessions.
